Wicklow 200 2018
« on: 13, January, 2018, 01:20:33 PM »

I've entered this again this year after taking a break last year - was chatting to Colm and Juan - hope you guys are still up for this so we can do some training together and hopefully do the event in a mini MAD peleton.

Creating this thread for discussion on the build up - others more than welcome.

I'm mainly doing it as prep for BC Bike Race and will probably be somewhere in the region of 7 - 8 hours moving time for completion - happy to take the food stops though!!

So is the sign up open yet? Forgot to check myself. If so will definitely be on for this. Was even trying to convince Niamh on our spin last night to sign up for it as well.

I think yed be able for it - but I would recommend some long days out on the bike before it, cramp was the real killer I found.

Can't think of a reason not to pop over for this. So will likely sign up and figure out logistics later.

Id be interested in joining the training spins, though I wont be going fast on the day. I did a good few spins before last year and strangely found in more difficult building up to 60km than 100+

When do you want to start?

Not sure what Simon was planing. Myself I'd be looking to get out on some mid-week training spins, weekends are primarily for the mountain bike. Would look to maybe do some spins up around the bohernabreena reservoir some climbs around that way to get you in shape. Could maybe try arrange something for next week or so if your up for it?

@colmIll try a midweek spin, I may need to upgrade my commuting lights for those roads.
Any day bar(no rain, little wind and temp) Tuesday is good ;)

In previous years I have prepared by riding the mountain bike a good amount and then doing some progressively longer road spins as it approaches.

Starting with 100km, 130km, 160km.

Simple as.

But can do more than that. I'm not a fan of winter road biking!

They changed the course last year, way harder again as the old long hill hits you straight away and has a much worse surface to roundwood.

They removed the avoca git of a climb with a really steep but short road out of the valley, which is much better.

But right at the end you have windgates (aka most of bray head) and the big drag out of enniskerry, with 180km plus in the legs it's hard.

The worst I did on the 200 was with 50km commuting spins, the best with 125 commuting spins. Get the miles in and 65% effort going around and you'll be right.

How's everyone doing?

About to start my commute again and did 95km at the weekend.

Fitted a semi instead of a compact in error, going to struggle on the hills I suspect.

I did a 40km road spin a couple of weeks ago - hope that's enough :0

Seriously - I've done a couple of long (>80km) mountain bike spins so I'll just have to find out whether it along with previous road biking is sufficient.

Frank and I were discussing a 150km spin this weekend if we get the chance - Taylors, Laragh, Wicklow Gap, Glenmalure, Sally Gap and home. Any interest?

that sounds like a great spin, unfortunately my road bike is abroad. I would join a mtb long spin Sunday, a 5+ hours spin on the Wicklow trails.

Wicklow gap to glenmalure? Doubling back on yourself?

Still working on stamina rather than climbing.
