Commuter Bike Recommendations?
« on: 15, December, 2017, 12:39:11 PM »
Any advice on a bike that would be good for commuting. Nothing too expensive and preferably something I could pick up second hand. I’m not ruling out a road bike of some kind (no lycra) although if that doubled as a turbo trainer I suppose that would be a win win.

Cheers,
James

If you're looking for something cheap, it's hard to beat the value of the Boardman range in Halfords.

Not the cheapest option, but I bought a CX bike for commuting and have been delighted with the flexibility it offers. It isn't as quick as I expected with the CX tyres but if you want the extra speed you can always put some slicks on it and it's pretty nippy. Also handy for hitting a few fireroads and offroad sections to lengthen the commute in the summer months, added bonus you can race it in the winter too.

EDIT: And I use it plenty on the turbo trainer too! Buy a cheap rim and turbo tyre and just flip it over when you want to ride the turbo.

Defo a cx for me, does everything, on road, off road, so versatile and plenty of decent ones available 2nd hand. Mine is 2nd hand carbon and I love it. Mine has v brakes too, discs were not a biggie for me.

I have a Kona Rove for sale, I used it as a commuter for a while and it a savage piece of kit.  Serious discount on the asking price for club members ;)

Cx bike is a great choice, very versatile. You can put on road tyres and will be flying

A Cx bike opens you future option such as competition in winter time and for the rest of the year you just need a secon pair of road tires

Thanks for the advice lads. Not sure I'd put myself through a CX race but it nice to have options!!

Would something like this be a good or bad buy?

Depends on the condition. Its grand if that's the budget you want to spend and it's in good Nick. Can't tell much from that photo. Its an older model bike and in cork though..... here is another option but Clare... XL too. Looks pretty clean. http://www.adverts.ie/13673180  2nd hand can be a waiting game for a good bike at a good price

Thanks Eric, good to keep that in mind.

Is something like this good? Probably out of my price range:
