Help needed - Choosing a new bike
« on: 12, December, 2017, 09:14:20 PM »
Hey,

So I'm just after moving back up to Dublin and looking to get back into mountain biking! I did a bit of mountain biking when I was younger back home and also over in Vancouver where I've been living for the past while.

Saying this, I'm in the market for a new bike at the moment. Since it's my first bike I'm not too keen on breaking the bank just yet. I'd be more than happy to pick up something fairly entry level with the idea of customizing the bike over the next little while.

I'm about 6' and have a budget of somewhere between 500-600. I've been looking on the buy and sell forum and on Facebook for some second hand bikes but have also come across a few new ones online as well that I'd love to get some feedback on.

I'm leaning towards either Saracen Mantra Pro or the Carrera Kraken. The Bizango does look good but limited enough supply it seems as it's 2016 version and I probably won't be looking at picking up the bike until sometime in the new year.

I appreciate any help and or anyone who could point me in the direction of any other alternatives!

Cheers

That'd be my choice for the money

Check also with biking.ie as to whether they are selling any ex rental Vitus bikes

Cheers Stephen.

Looks like a great bike. A little bit more than I was hoping to spend but I know sometimes that's inevitable. That bike would be a massive step up than any that I posted would it?

I did and unfortunately I'm a couple weeks too late.

Well two of the links you posted are frame only so you'd need a couple of hundred to finish fitting out the bike so I thought the Vitus would be in your range.

500-600e is tough to call . There's cheap and there's  really so cheap that it wouldn't last any length of time on rough trails and you're spending the $$$ you saved on repairs and replacement parts and  is probably best used for commuting to the shops or a trip to the pub if you catch my drift :-)

Frames only? My bad, I thought all four of them were full bikes. In particular the Halford's ones, didn't realize they sold only the frames.

Yeah makes sense to me. Could be best to try and hold out for a little bit longer and build up the budget a little bit further. I'm not one that is too fond of waiting though!  :D

Unfortunately the bike is outside the budget at the moment. Somewhere in the future maybe but don't have that kind of money at the moment to be spending on a bike.

Cheers anyway!

To save you some time, I would generally advise to avoid Suntour forks, they may make some good ones, but most of them are rubbish. Rockshox, Fox & X-Fusion make good forks. Rockshox make some bad forks too, their old Dart forks were rubbish, I don't know if their newer XC28/30/32 forks are any better, but the recon/reba/sid are good.

You could pick up a nice secondhand 26" hardtail for under 300 & have a nice budget for fixing up any wear and tear.

You can get a new Vitus Nucleus for between 550 and 780 depending on spec levels.

The Sentier is a real bargain if you stretch to 699 - I had one of these last year and it was great.

Interesting to hear on Suntour forks. Been doing a fair bit of research on them the last couple of weeks and heard they are very much the budget fork. Can be fairly hard to avoid at this budget.

Even at this stage it could just be the case of picking up something relatively cheap starting off and upgrading it down the line.

Although that is the second recommendation for the Sentier. it seems like a solid bike for the price.

Cheers Eric!

It looks like there are two bikes I could pick up now, both of them are 550 which is about what I'm hoping to spend.

First would be the  Saracen Mantra Pro 2016 (http://www.revolvebikeshop.ie/10497/products/2016-saracen-mantra-pro-27-5-hardtail-mountain-bike.aspx)

Or alternatively the Marlin Bobcat 5 (https://www.marinbikes.com/gb/bikes/bobcat-trail-5-1)

The first one would be new while the second would be one from the group mentioned by Eric.

The Marin is a better bike, I'd be surprised if you couldn't get better value for a secondhand bike though. If at all possible, I'd stretch the extra 150 for the Sentier, you're getting a brand new 10 speed drivetrain & an air fork.

Cheers, so it looks like the best bet is to hold out and try and gather together the funds for the Sentier or keep the eye on the second hand market. Hopefully some decent bikes will crop up over the new year.

It's on the buy and sell mtb ireland group on Facebook. Don't know the fella from Adam but looks a nice spec bike.
