Slieve Bloom mountain bike - I know its not ready yet..
« on: 09, March, 2017, 11:18:50 AM »
Hi,
Apparently this is meant to be ready for the Summer, but i was wondering if anyone has been down there recently? I am wondering if there are any parts that are rideable, even though not officially finished?

I was onto them on Facebook and asked if there was any news. The reply i got was

"It a 4 million project. We are having difficulty getting a commitment for funding in the short term from Failte Ireland. It is very disappointing, but we will keep up the effort and will come back to anyone who can help to put pressure on them to see what great value it would be to the development of tourism in this part of the country."

Looks like it won't be ready any time soon.

Dave could you reply and ask if there is anything MAD members could do to help?

Who should we be emailing about the importance of the project, that sort of thing.

They aren't too quick replying but I'll keep this thread going if I get any more information.

Update from Facebook

"Delighted to announce  1million in funding has been secured for the first stage of the Slieve Bloom Mountain Biking Project as announced his morning by local TD Charlie Flanagan.  Laois and Offaly local authorities together with Coillte applied for funding under the Outdoor Recreation infrastructure scheme from the Department of Arts heritage Regional Rural and Gaeltacht. This funding will be topped up to 1.4million by the local authorities. We look forward to the first stage been completed by April 2018."

The section open is only 4km right now. ETA is still Summer for a decent segment to be completed.
